The Catalan Foundation for Research and Innovation (FCRI - Fundació Catalana per a la Recerca i la Innovació) organizes this year, from 9 to 18 of November, the 12th Science Week, during which many events will be held in Catalonia. All of them will have the climate change as the main character.
What is the climate change? What are the research activities realized in Spain to avoid its negative effects? What are the actions that we can take against it? The Science Week will be the ideal forum to gain knowledge about such an important issue. The Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de
Catalunya (CTTC) takes part in this event with a speech given by the Director of International Relations, Dr. Carles Antón. This speech will be devoted to present what are the relations between telecommunications and climate change.
The Information and Communications Technologies (ICT) are strictly connected to the energy consumption. In particular, we could say that they are “victims”, “executioners” and “heroes” of the climate change. They are victims because they suffer from the natural catastrophes and the temperature increase, which affect the infrastructures and the network equipments. They are executioners because they consume a big amount of energy with their equipments and processes. Finally, they are heroes, because they can help reduce the emission of CO2. The speech will focus on the contributions of future communications systems in the framework of ICT, in order to reduce CO2 emissions. Additionally, particular attention will be devoted to the next generation networks (NGN) and to the new opportunities that they will raise to change life and job styles, which will have an impact on the CO2 reduction. Finally, some examples will be given with respect to NGN which are currently being investigated and developed in the framework of CTTC. This speech, entitled “Telecommunications and climate change: proposals to reduce CO2 emissions”, will be given in the CTTC auditorium, on November 12, at 10 am.
