The True Cost of Erectile Dysfunction

Press Release from:
James Kirby

Over a third of all British men will suffer from some sort of erectile dysfunction (ED) at some point in their lives. Understandably this may be difficult to discuss with a partner or doctor. A survey by the Sexual Dysfunction Association found that almost half of impotence sufferers took 2 years to summon the courage to seek treatment.

A third of ED cases are due to psychological reasons, with the rest caused by physical conditions or more frequently, a combination of the two. The presence of ED will

normally cause some anxiety in a man which, in turn, will make it more difficult to get an erection next time – and so on. This is a common cause of temporary impotence and there can be very few sexually active men who have never experienced it in their lives. This ‘betrayal’ by their bodies leaves men depressed, vulnerable and often, close to despair. These feelings of anxiety have a knock-on effect and can cause stress in work, social life and most readily in a relationship.

Impotence can cause loss of intimacy, lack of dialogue and resentment between partners. This is because impotence strikes at the very heart of a man's self-confidence, so when it occurs, many men instinctively try to avoid both sex and discussion of the problem with their partner. From a partner's perspective, the inexplicable communication breakdown can be confusing. Contrary to the fears of many women, a penis that won't get erect is not evidence of a lack of male sexual desire! Any number of issues (anxiety chief among them) may override even a strong libido.

“The true cost of erectile dysfunction is not completely appreciated” says James Kirby, customer Service Manager of the website Firstmed. “All too often men ignore the problem and don’t discuss it with their partners. This can have a devastating knock on effect on other parts of their lives and others. Our customers often verify that stress from ED has affected their self esteem, their marriages, and even their work. One customer commented that the depression he found himself in was deepened by the onset of erectile dysfunction, and that his inability to discuss these matters with his partner was a contributing factor to the break down of his marriage. One can only assume that if he had children that the ensuing break up had a knock on effect on his children and their relationship.

Erectile Dysfunction generally does not respond well to neglect. Some erectile disorders do improve with the passage of time, but chronic impotence usually has an organic basis and requires medical attention. Couples sometimes intentionally, or unintentionally, choose to ignore or deny the problem, prolonging suffering and decreasing the chances for a full recovery.
