One of our friends posted on our lawn care business forum that he had recently retired from serving over seas in the Army and he was in the process of starting his new lawn care business. Without much start up money, he did a great job boot strapping his business. He didn’t even have a lawn mower! I share with you this story in hopes of inspiring you to go out into the world of business and explore. You don’t need a lot of money to get started. Let’s look and see how L.W. got his start.

L.W. shared with us some of his story at, getgopher dot com, on how he got started, “I

started in May 2007 on Craig list my slogan was Your mower my service! It worked ok I got 3 customers and was so surprised it worked. So in June I changed from that to putting my mower and weed wacker in the back of my car. I now have 14 customers none on contracts. I feel like I can’t ask for a lot due to the way I come across. I have no truck and am just not very professional looking. I will be getting a truck next year. What do you think?”

WOW! Talk about a can do attitude. Working with what you have and making it happen. That’s the sign of a great entrepreneur. It also helps that L.W. has a military background. As we have seen these past years, during wartime, nothing ever is perfect. You have to be creative and make the best of what you have at the time you have it. Business is very similar. When you are starting your business, you want to avoid going into debt at all costs. Think of it like this. If you are going to learn to swim by jumping into the deep end of a pool, don’t strap weights onto your ankles. Don’t go out and buy a new landscaping truck. Don’t go out and finance a new $10,000 mower. You don’t need it and you aren’t going to be able to make the money to pay it off. Start simple. Start cheap. Scale up as you go. Only buy what you need when you need it.
