Sanofi faces competition from three Acomplia generics in India - Sanofi-Aventis is facing competition in India from three generic versions of its Acomplia anti-obesity drug, Les Echos reported. Sun Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharmaceutical and Zydus Cadila have recently launched Acomplia generics, the newspaper said, benefiting from the fact Indian legislation only protects patents registered from 1995. The patent for Acomplia's rimonabant molecule was registered in 1994, according to Les Echos.
The newspaper quoted a Sanofi-Aventis spokeswoman as saying the drug company is 'examining all legal options'. A Zydus spokesman, meanwhile, said the group also plans to launch its generic in the future in other countries where the legislation would allow it.
