Sanofi-Aventis is facing competition in India from three generic versions of its Acomplia anti-obesity drug, Les Echos reported. Sun Pharmaceuticals, Torrent Pharmaceutical and Zydus Cadila have recently launched Acomplia generics, the newspaper said, benefiting from the fact Indian legislation only protects patents registered from 1995. The patent for Acomplia's rimonabant molecule was registered in 1994, according to Les Echos.

Sanofi-Aventis has received regulatory approval for Acomplia in several European countries, with varying levels of reimbursement from health insurance schemes, and is awaiting a ruling by the US Food and Drug Administration next month.
