We are currently working hard on our own social networking site (and are very excited about it), so when I read today what the state of Conn. is planning to do, I was very disheartened, to say the least.
We are requiring our users to be over 18 years of age. We are going to say it on our website. We are going to set it up in such a way that you have to say you are 18 to sign up. But how are we supposed to verify that kids under 18 are signing up? For a small company, that is impossible. Even if somebody walks up to you, tells you they are 18 and produce a fake ID, how would you
know they are not what (who) they say they are?
Under age kids manage to get in to clubs and bars (not to mention buying cigarettes from your local 711) every single day! And they don’t do this behind a computer screen either! They walk up to the bouncer, confidently hand them a fake ID and get inside the club/bar or even get drinks (or cigarettes). Like the article said, “If we can put a man on the moon, we can check ages of people on these Web sites.” While that is true, and in fact, I myself use that very saying every time there is a SNAFU it doesn’t always work that way... read the whole article here: http://hipfox.com
