If you've never heard of a shame researcher, maybe it's because shame is one of those subjects we rarely talk about. When we feel shame about the way we look, about our failures and perceived flaws, often, we bury those feelings deep inside our gut. We feel small and we want to run and hide, and so, we keep those emotions below the surface as we struggle with feeling unacceptable and unworthy. But there's a new book that tackles the subject of shame among women and the connection between our personal lives and larger social expectations of our culture.
Shame researcher Dr.Brené
Brown's book "I Thought It Was Just Me: Women Reclaiming Power and Courage in a Culture of Shame" is based on a six-year "qualitative study on shame and its affect on the way women live, love, work, parent and build relationships." Focusing on shame, empathy and vulnerability, Dr. Brown's work is in understanding the experiences and emotions that helps us to build meaning relationships, as well as those that make us feel isolated or disconnected. Dr. Brown shares her insights on this relatively swept-under-the-rug subject.
