It’s Halloween on the 31st of October and Questico will be celebrating. This ancient festival of spirits is enormously popular in the US and is gaining in popularity here in Great Britain. At Questico Halloween will be celebrated very traditionally with the witchboard or Ouija board. A well-loved precursor of the Ouija board is moving glasses. Summoning the “spirits” was a favourite parlour game at one time, with séances and mediums being very much in vogue in the early 20th century. The patent for what was a logical development of moving glasses was granted in 1891 in America. Soon

after this, the Ouija board went into serial production; it was available in all the toy shops and sold like hot cakes. Nowadays these boards are sold as Ouija boards, spirit boards or talking boards.

What is the Ouija board? The Ouija board usually takes the form of a wooden board on which the letters A – Z appear along with the numbers from 1 – 9. The words “yes” and “no”, “thank you” and “end” also feature. Attached to this is a smaller wooden part, usually in the form of a semicircle with a point at the top in which a round hole has been drilled. This part is called a “planchette“. If the séance is a success, this element will move across the board with the fingertips placed upon it and indicates letters or numbers by means of which a coherent message is derived. Halloween-special at Questico On the stroke of midnight, Questico Ouija board specialists will make contact with the spirit world. One of these is advisors at is Ursula Boucher. Boucher was already no stranger to extrasensory vibrations. She had experienced these while playing moving glasses with friends when in her teens.

She later had a unique experience as a result of an invitation from her friend, Professor Bender, of Freiburg University. As Professor of Parapsychology, he had invited Ursula to Freiburg to attend an Ouija board séance. At first, the message she received made no sense at all to her so she took her leave and went home. It was only once she was in the lift on the way up to her flat that the scales fell from her eyes: she had been unable to decipher the message because it wasn’t in her native language, German, but in French. The message was from her late mother-in-law and advised her against any imminent travel plans. And she was in fact booked to fly to Canada the very next day. She cancelled her trip, trusting in the premonition.
