A brilliant tabla virtuoso from the Delhi Gharana – the 24-year-old Deepak Mehta does not belong to a family of musicians. His talent was spotted by his class teacher at the age of six. Starting with playing bongo, Deepak moved on to congo, and finally to the more demanding discipline of tabla on the advice of Ustad Amjad Ali Khan, the sarod legend, in 1991.
Deepak became the disciple of world renowned Gurus Late Ustad Chhamma Khan of Delhi Gharana followed by his son Padamshree Late Ustad Shafaat Ahmed Khan - captivating audiences by his performances at home and abroad.
It was no surprise that at the age of 14, because of his sheer virtuosity and rhythmic melody and creativity on tabla, Deepak won the highest award for teenagers, the National "BAL SHREE" Award in 1996 presented by the President of India Late Dr. Shanker Dayal Sharma. Deepak is looked upon by many as a tabla legend and often cited as "Zakir Hussain in the making". He has accompanied noted instrumentalists and vocalists like Anup Jalota. Deepak Mehta has performed extensively in the USA, Canada, South Africa, Moscow and Kirgistan and has been appreciated and honoured with many coveted awards.
