Press Release from:
Cortex
After successfully completing the pre-expedition to the Cho Oyu (Himalaya, 8.201 m) in autumn 2006, the international scientific team Xtreme-Everest and CORTEX are now preparing for the main expedition to the Mount Everest taking place in spring. According to the agreement, CORTEX will support the Xtreme Everest Team with their expertise and metabolic exercise testing equipment. A total of 10 MetaMax 3B systems – CORTEX’s well proven and successfully sold top-quality mobile cardiopulmonary exercise testing system – are going to be used on the top of the world.
Moreover, two
members of CORTEX will accompany the Xtreme-Everest Team and will assure maximum scientific accuracy of all measurements.
With this cooperation CORTEX again shows its world leading-position in applied and scientific cardiopulmonary exercise testing – the analysis of respiratory gases under defined physical workload. So far top competitive athletes in particular have benefited from this modern diagnosis and training method and newly developed CORTEX products are enormously expanding the fields of application. Cardiopulmonary diagnosis, optimisation of training sessions for individuals active in recreational sports, weight reduction, changing eating habits,… only to mention a few key words. Also CORTEX’s business reaches new heights. In 2006 CORTEX achieved its best result in history with a sales increase of more than 20%. Management expects a further increase in 2007. Xtreme-Everest – a unique scientific research project: the largest field study of human responses to hypoxia ever performed. Trekkers will undergo a series of tests at several laboratories along the route. Clinicians will measure the amount of oxygen in the blood along with exercise tests on a bike to see how well the brain, lungs and metabolism work at extreme altitudes. Low levels of oxygen in the blood of high altitude climbers are similar to levels in critically ill patients on breathing machines with severe heart and lung conditions. Scientists hope to draw parallels between the human body pushed to its limits during critical illness and changes that occur in extreme environments. This research project will help doctors in intensive care understand how people react to low levels of oxygen and may lead to improvements in the care of extremely sick patients.
